Description

Product Description:
BURN BARRIER™ 129 Fire Retardant Varnish is a Class “B” fire retardant basecoat, that is
used in conjunction with BURN BARRIER™ 130 Fire Retardant Varnish Overcoat. It is
designed for use on all new, and previously coated wood surfaces (except floors). BURN
BARRIER™ 129 and BURN BARRIER™ 130 contain no water soluble ingredients. The varnish
system is suitable for use on both INTERIOR and EXTERIOR surfaces. On exterior
exposure the life expectancy is similar to that of conventional alkyd varnishes. BURN
BARRIER™ 129 is manufactured with Rule 66 Mineral Spirits and possesses no strong or
unpleasant odor during application. For maximum durability, cleansibility, and to comply with
the Underwriters’ Laboratories fire hazard classifications (ratings) established, BURN
BARRIER™ 129 must be overcoated with BURN BARRIER™ 130 Fire Retardant Varnish
Overcoat.

Surface Preparation:
All surfaces must be dry, clean, free of all wax, grease, dirt, sanding dust etc. Glossy surfaces
must be dulled with sandpaper or steel wool. All sanding, filling of nail holes, etc., must be
completed prior to the application of BURN BARRIER™ 129.

Application:
BURN BARRIER™ 129 can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. Stir material well before
using, then apply a uniform coat at a coverage rate up to 300 sq.ft./gallon. The coverage rate
obtained will vary with the porosity of the wood. Dries to touch in approximately four hours but
allow at least 24 hours drying time before overcoating with BURN BARRIER™ 130.

Thinners:
For thinning use only BURN BARRIER™ 129 reducer. MINERAL SPIRITS or BURN
BARRIER™. 129 Reducer maybe used for cleaning.

WARNING:
Adequate ventilation must be provided during and after application until the coating has dried.
Avoid breathing vapors or spray mist.

CAUTION:
The liquid coating contains volatile (combustible) solvents. Due care must be exercised
during and after application until coating is dry.

Fire Tests:
Flame Spread Rating: Class “B”. When tested in accordance with ASTM E84 (NFPA255) the
coating obtained the following fire hazard classification. A complete report from the
Underwriters’ Laboratories is available upon request.
