BURN BARRIER™ Mastic 70 is a specially formulated asbestos free water base, reinforced
intumescent fire retardant mastic, designed primarily for use on electrical, communication cables
and their supporting trays, where it is either necessary or desirous to increase their fire endurance
time. When exposed to fire or high heat, the coating puffs up (intumesces), and forms a protective
dense foam fire barrier, that shields the cables and trays; thereby retarding the penetrating of
heat and propagation of flame. Mastic No. 70 should be used where maximum tire protection is
Abrasion Resistance: Excellent, dries to a tough hard finish.
Flexibility: Excellent, withstands normal expansion and contraction.
Initial Intumescent Temperature Range: 325F to 375F
Appearance: Spray application results in a textured fine stucco-like finish.
All dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign matter must be removed. Mask off surfaces not designated
for coating. All overspray should be cleaned up immediately.
Can be applied by brush, roller or spray; however, spray application is recommended, as a more
uniform coverage can be obtained. Spraying should be done by heavy duty conventional or
airless spray equipment to achieve a minimum wet film thickness of 1/16 inch [62 mils (1.59
mm)]. Dry film thickness 31 mils (.79 mm). Grams/m = 1945.
Dries by water evaporation. Under normal atmospheric conditions, a 1/16 inch coating will dry
to touch within 2 hours, hard dry in 24 hours. It continues to cure to a very tough film that is
resistant to deterioration from flaking, impact, vibration, and temperature changes. Will not dust,
flake or spill.
BURN BARRIER™ Mastic No. 70, when applied at 1/16 inch wet film thickness, will cover approximately
25.6 square feet or surface area.
Maintenance: Repairs can be made with brush, putty knife or trowel.
Thinning and Equipment Clean-up: Thinning is not recommended. For equipment clean-up, use
Color: Off white
BURN BARRIER™ Mastic must be protected from freezing, at all times, and should be stored at temperatures
between 40F 95F.
BURN BARRIER™ Mastic contains water, and can conduct electricity until thoroughly dry. Extreme
caution must be exercised when the material is being applied, and until thoroughly dry.
Coating Effect on Ampacity: Current reduction at temperature stability:
